Certificate of Achievement in Professional Supervision

Who is it for?

The course is appropriate for those who are responsible for supervising the professional practice of others within the workplace; those who are responsible for line managing and/or developing the professional practice of others within the workplace and practitioners who provide professional supervision sessions for others within the workplace.

This is an interactive course developing skills and knowledge to enable practitioners to deliver effective professional supervision including one-to-one communication.

The course supports the implementation of the CWDC and Skills for Care standards for Providing Effective Supervision (2007) and is the preferred qualification for a variety of professional practitioners

The programme runs over 3 months and includes attendance at 4 interactive full day workshops :

  • Developing an Effective Approach to Supervision
  • Creating Supportive Supervision Interactions
  • Developing Professional Practice within the Workplace
  • Performance Monitoring and Assessment


This course carries 20 level 6 Higher Education credits and successful completion leads to a Lancaster University Certificate of Achievement. If you complete a further four level 7 courses (each carrying 10 credits) then you will be awarded a Lancaster University Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development.


Is via a written assignment submitted after the workshops are completed, there is also telephone and email support available from the tutor during this period. The assignments are based around practical experiences and reflection upon actual supervision sessions that you undertake within the workplace. There are no exams.

Entry requirements

You will need to be in work (paid or unpaid) in a role which provides the scope for you to achieve the aims and learning outcomes of your target qualification.

Applicants have to be appropriately professionally and occupationally qualified to undertake supervision duties and have supervision responsibilities for at least one supervisee
